Much of what I have learned since beginning in the humble technical service I have gathered from the internet. Thus, I feel it is important on an informative site like this to give a glimpse of some of the sites from which I have benefitted. Among the top in this category is ChurchSoundcheck.com, hosted by Curt Taipale and his wife, Jeanna. The Taipales offer their primary web attraction, a discussion list to which you can subscribe, free as a ministry of their company, Taipale Media Systems. I'll let you read all the details about subscribing and such (but I will tell you I really like the one daily e-mail digest mode, though you miss out on the immediate interaction), but I should say that some of the people who communicate frequently are amazing. Some of these people have been in and around audio/visual systems for a quarter century, and are legends among even the highest associations in their fields. You'll even find representatives from some manufacturers on there, as well as some dealers.
Okay, so I'll admit that some days I don't read it at all. Other times, I will let them pile up and follow the threads the best I can in my (quicky decreasing) free time over the weekend. I'm saying this because there will be the "I don't have time" argument surfacing as a reason for not subscribing. Well, you won't know until you try, and I think you will be richer for the experience, even if it is just connecting with others seeking TechExcellence in your area.
A couple of other quick points. First, the discussion list is free, but I must advise you to read the guidelines for posting to cut down on unnecessary bandwidth usage and "flaming." And second, while there are many full-time consultants and designers on the site, it is not the place to get your brand-new 2000 seat auditorium designed for a 100% discount. I can give you lots of good ideas, as can many on the list, but if you need a consultant, get one. Please.
